23 month old vocabulary impaired? Help with expanding it?
I'm worried that our 23 month old is way behind in his vocabulary collection. He likes attempting a conversation but he can only utter holophrases or short sentences like, "No more, clean bed sheets, grandma home, eat, dog treats." I was watching some YouTube videos of children the same age as him and they're talking with a much more expansive vocabulary relative to him. Some of them are even identifying and speaking all the colors and numbers with correct pronunciation. Our 23 month old still can't even produce the 'r' sound most of the time, like robot sounds like wobot. I'd like to know if he's on track with the majority of toddlers his age or if he's likely to struggle with acquiring vocabulary, as it may pose as an issue or its effects snowball and make education more difficult down the road. I know he's familiar with identifying a particular object or place, but he doesn't always speak it. The types of words he most frequently actually speaks to us are: No, dump, truck, ew, yuck, three, one, cat, elephant, duck, bottle, clock, train, ball, yellow, purple, blue, red, book, apple, water, bridge, money, oh, go, eat, boat, up, down, nine, mama, dada, push, hot, bees, monkey, keys, cars, heart, robot, brain, dino, doggie, moon, owl, boots, doughnut, juice, egg, spoon, hat, baby, diaper, more, frog, toes, balloon, bubbles, toy, belly button, mickey, hammer, mouth, teeth, eyes, ears, cold, snow, bath, snake, loud, dirty, treat, nose, bird, airplane, chips, cloud, street, clean, river, dam, hippo, ladybug, chocolate, bush and probably a handful of other words I can't think of right now. Please help, I'd like to know where he fits among others his age, so if it is a problem I can seek a specialized practitioner to help accommodate his weaknesses and enhance his strengths and reach an optimal or efficient mode of acquiring the vocabulary he needs. ...Sometimes I like to think that some of these YouTube videos of 23 month olds repeating sonnets and uttering words containing 4 or more syllables are really like 4 year olds, lol. Thanks already to those who responded! So relieving, and I'm feeling better now after watching those depressing YouTube videos of prodigious children I mistook for average. Yay. lol shamedly, I'm a little annoyed at watching these parents show off their wonderchild.

I would be grateful that he is even putting 2 words together already (like "more cookie, dog treats, grandma home"....my son is 23 months...turns 2 on April 1st and CANNOT do that AT ALL. Your son is doing perfectly fine for his age. My son can only say a few SINGLE words. He says ball, mama, dada, and baba.... he attempts other words though like apple and puppy but he only says the first consonant sound of them. He is in early intervention for speech therapy but I wouldn't be worried about your toddler at all, they're doing great!

What experiments can you do with 2 year olds?
I will be watching a group of toddlers and children 1 1/2 - 3 1/2 years old (which will be group needing most of my attention) and some 5-7 year old kids at a wedding dinner in a restaurant (outside). Since I don't have much money to buy any games and accessories and my childtime toys are at my parents house 7 hours away and the parents probaly don't want to bring all their toys to the wedding either... I need some fun and easy experiments and games for toddlers of the age group 2-4. It's important that there's not much material needed. I already thought about drawing, maybe doing a puzzle if the parents will bring one, throwing a ball at cans, searching a surprise that's hidden under a pot with a spoon, and balancing an egg on a spoon. Any other ideas?Experiments?Games?

The younger ones will not be developmentally ready for any competitive games. Keep it simple. You can make or buy playdough. It's cheap. Bring blank or construction paper and crayons (also cheap). Set up some stations in advance if you can. If you can get some balls and other simple and cheap toys that would help as well. Hopefully some of the kids will have toys with them, especially the 18 month olds. You can do simple copying games, rhythm games, rolling a ball back and forth, coloring, playdough, etc. With some of the older toddlers/preschoolers and the older kids you may be able to do hide and seek. The older ones may be able to do a guided hunt, kind of like an easter egg hunt. You can also do simple games like What Time is It Mr. Fox, Killer Froggy (I'd call it Hunter Froggy instead), body rhythm game, etc. If the parents provide some games and puzzles that'd be great too. I also thought before reading the full description that you could do a sensory box or melt ice cubes in warm water with the little ones, but since it's a wedding event I doubt that would be a good idea. You could make a sensory box using cotton or tissue paper instead of dry goods (I usually use kidney beans or dry oatmeal). Hide some simple items and choke-safe items in there.

Why is Hannah Montana even worth $5,000.00 ?
What the **** man? I saw on the news that grown men are dressing up in a wig, skirts, high heels running in a race while carring a toy baby in one arm and an egg on a spoon in the other! And guess why, to try to get tickets to a Hannah Montana concert! WHAT THE F**K? They said" it beats paying over $5,000.00 to scalpers". give me a f**k*ng break! Is seeing a 14 year old in concert really worth it? I mean I can understand that they have daughters that want to see her but I mean come on, buy them the C.D and they should be happy! This is true! Im not kidding! It was on the news! Tell me why is seeing a "NEVER WAS" (Brittany Spears is a has-been, Hannah Montana is a never was!) 14 year old really worth it! Truthfully and honestly, does anyone answering this question even think that Hannah Montana is worth even $500.00? I mean honestly! She aint even that good a actress, let alone a singer!

Simply, this is pop culture at its greatest or most decadent. This concert tour has become a major player in an industry that needs some good news to end the year. I don't believe anyone could have predicted this crazed demand for tickets.

Help with my noisy Alexandrian Parrot..?
My Alexandrian Parrot 'bo' is nearly approx 2 and a half years old. I bought him when he was only 4weeks out of the egg, my family and I would spoon feed him four times a day, so as you can imagine he doesn’t know any better than us.. He’s a massive attention seeker; he has a room to himself and can pretty much get away with anything because he is so cute/spoilt. However he is really getting noisy lately, he has so many toys & a huge cage that has its door open from the time he wakes up to the time he sleeps. He goes in when he wants to eat as his food bowls are in his cage.. My question is how can i get him not to scream so much and so loud when he wants attention.. Sometimes it gets so ear piercing loud that we have to put him in the cage and close the door to get him to calm down.. Even than he sometimes doesn’t stop and tears up the paper on the bottom of his cage, so we feel bad and let him out. Is there anything more i can do that will stop him from being noisy when we are visible to him but not directly paying attention to him?

As the person above me stated, he is spoiled, that is good and bad. I should know, I have an Indian Ringneck! He is reaching sexual maturity and is having massive hormonal changes right now, and that doesn't help either. Here is a great training article from Bird Talk Magazine. Training A Bird Not To Scream Stop The Squawk Discover the 11 Dos (and a few Don’ts) of training parrots not to scream By Elise Kaplan Do: Expect a fair amount of noise on a regular basis. Certain species are definitely louder than others. Amazons, cockatoos and Aratinga conures, such as suns or jendays, are known to blast eardrums just to express the sheer joy of being alive. Budgies chatter and cockatiels whistle. Even my Pionus, Ariel, is capable of quite respectable volume. Do: Make sure that your pet bird is safe and well. If you hear a call that sounds different — that sounds like an alarm call — it’s better to be safe than sorry and make sure your bird is OK. Of course, some birds have a way of making that alarm call if, for example, “somebody” has loaded their water dish with soggy pellets or eaten the last grape. By being observant and noting the types of calls your bird makes on different occasions, you will know when your bird really needs you. Do: Make sure your bird knows how to play on its own. It seems odd, but many birds are not born knowing how to play with toys. They can learn on their own, in time, or by watching other birds play. You also can let your bird watch you enjoy a toy to give it an idea of how much fun it can be. If your pet has a variety of entertaining toys that you rotate frequently, it will have less time to fret about missing you. Do: Greet your bird when you come home. Chances are, it has been waiting for you while you were out and is eager to see you. If you wander off to read your mail or start preparing dinner without taking a moment to say “hello,” your bird is likely to react with righteous indignation. Establish a routine of greeting your bird, even briefly, soon after you walk in the door. Do: Take your bird with you when you can. It might not always be practical or safe to have your bird with you; for example, a kitchen with a lit stove isn’t the safest place for your bird to spend its time. On the other hand, you can avoid a lot of problem screaming by keeping a perch for your bird to use in other rooms, even if you are just folding laundry or reading a book. After all, isn’t it flattering that your bird demands your company so enthusiastically? Do: Call to your bird frequently when you are around the house. If you can get in the habit of calling to your bird before it thinks to call you, you can nip in the bud a lot of problem screaming. Do: Establish an acceptable contact call. If your bird talks, you can encourage it to call “Hello” or “Whatcha doin’” rather than shake the windows with a scream. Birds that aren’t big talkers also can be taught to use more acceptable sounds to communicate. For example, Ariel is fond of a certain lip-smacking kiss sound, and many birds can produce a good wolf whistle. Call to your bird frequently with the preferred contact call, and it is likely to start using it as well. Do: Reward use of the contact call. Respond to the more acceptable contact call by returning the call, answering in your own words or poking your head briefly into the bird’s room if you can. Be consistent and generous in your response if you would like your bird to learn quickly that this contact call, rather than a scream, is going to produce the best results. Do: Use a cue when you leave the room for a short time. If you are consistent about saying “Be right back!” each time you briefly leave the room, your bird will quickly learn that you will reappear soon and not to worry. Use a different cue such as “Be a good bird today!” when you head off to work. Do: Expect a negative habit to take as much time to undo then it did to become established in the first place. If you have spent the last six months effectively teaching your bird that you will appear when it screams, your parrot will not immediately stop the screaming in response to your efforts. Unfortunately, your bird is likely to spend a period of time screaming louder and more often than before. Don’ts: Don’t yell or punish. Responding angrily, banging on the cage bars and other negative responses will not only fail to correct a screaming problem, they also will damage the trust your bird has in you and in other members of the human race. Don’ts: Don’t respond in a way your bird won’t understand. If you put your bird in a timeout or cover its cage, it won’t be likely to associate this action as a consequence to screaming, although it might actually be momentarily gratified each time you reappear to move it or cover it up. Don’ts: Don’t reward screams. Whenever you call or reappear in response to a scream, you are teaching your bird that screaming gets the results it wants. Don’ts: Don’t give up. If you think the screaming will get worse (and it will, for a period of time) and decide to go back to rewarding screaming as you did before, the screaming habit will be more firmly entrenched than ever. Stay focused on the goal in order to get through this difficult period, and ultimately both you and your pet bird will be happier for it.
